Honesty about the issues of cost and quality are key values of BlueSkies. The programs for children and adults at BlueSkies have always grown out of the needs of those enrolled, rather than being built to fit within an arbitrary budget. BlueSkies believes that supporting young children includes support for their families, so the services offered and the fees are comprehensive. Other early childhood programs offer year-round care, or all-day care, or care for infants through 5's, or lunches, or diapers, or beautiful spaces, or educated and experienced teachersbut we don't know of any that offer all those things except BlueSkies. Those features add up to quality and also add up in expense. BlueSkies is a nonprofit agency receiving no state or federal subsidies for its Early Childhood Education programs for children or adults. The economics of childcare rest uneasily in the juxtaposition of high labor costs (though the pay rates are the lowest paid in any professional occupation, the high ratios mean 85% of expenses are for staff) and high fees for overstretched families. Tuition at BlueSkies covers the cost of enrollment for an individual child, but the agency continues a long tradition of fundraising by staff and an active parent committee to support reduced tuition for families who cannot pay the full rate. Any family whose child is admitted to the program is welcome to apply for financial assistance to subsidize a portion of the fees. |
